Dogs need exercise, even on rainy days

Tips for keeping your dog active when the weather keeps you indoors

Just like people, dogs benefit from regular exercise which can lead to a longer and healthier life. The most common way to get your dog moving may be to go for a walk around the block or a game of fetch in the park, but what do you do when the Spring and Summer rain makes outdoor excursions a non-option? Despite gloomy weather it’s still important to engage your dog or puppy in regular exercise and a bit of creativity can make that happen while remaining indoors.

One game that can be a great exercise for your pooch is having them run up and down the stairs. This is a great game for the kids to get involved in as you toss a toy up and down the stairs to get your dog moving. However, many dog experts urge pet owners to make sure there is clear beginning and end to playing games on the stairs so that your dog does not associate the stairs as a toy to be played with at anytime. You don’t want your dog rushing up the stairs to play with you when you least expect it. Using a toy or treat can help the dog associate the game with the incentive, instead of the stairs.

As has been made famous by television dog trainer Cesar Millan, a treadmill can be a nice substitute for a walk when weather forces you inside. However, be careful not to place the treadmill back up against a wall or use a lease which can be dangerous for the dog. If you choose to walk your dog on a treadmill you will need to provide constant supervision.

A game of hide-and-seek can be another great indoor exercise for your dog both physically and mentally. By teaching the dog to wait until you give the command from your hiding place, you give the dog a chance to sharpen its mental skills as he searches for you. However, it’s important to not let games and exercise routines happen in areas of the house where you don’t want a playful dog, such as the dinning room or office. By initiating the game with a specific command and rewarding the dog with a treat, you set clear parameters for your dog that the game has a beginning and an ending.

Dogs need a good workout just as much as their owners and bad weather should not be an excuse to be a slouch for a day. When you are confined to the great indoors, its time to get creative and find ways to engage your dog in exercise and play.
